Stancz in your browser
Dance spacing website: make your formations online, nothing to install
Stancz is a dance formation maker that runs as a website: open the editor at stancz.com in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, on Windows, macOS, Linux or a Chromebook, and start placing your dancers. This page walks through it, from an empty stage to formations timed to your music, and says what the browser version does not do.
In short
- Nothing to install: the editor opens in your browser, and your account (email, Google or Apple) keeps your choreographies online.
- A to-scale stage (10 × 6 m by default), 19 preset formations, music on a timeline, and 2D, 3D and audience views.
- Free plan: up to 3 choreographies at a time and 4 formations in each; Pro, at €3.99/month, removes both limits.
- No PDF or image export, and no real-time co-editing.
Make your formations online, step by step
The steps are the same on any computer; the names in quotes are the buttons you will see.
Open the editor in your browser
Click “Open the editor”, create your account with an email address, Google or Apple, and you land on your choreographies. Nothing is installed on the computer: your work is saved online with your account.
Create a choreography
“New choreography” opens a sheet: a name, the stage floor (Wood, Marley, Gym…) and an opening formation, with a shape (line, grid, circle…) and a number of dancers, or an empty stage. Confirm, and the editor opens.
Set the stage to scale
In the stage settings, enter the width and the depth in metres (10 × 6 m by default) and the grid cell size; “Magnetic grid” snaps the dancers to it. Spacing then reads in real distances: the gap between two dots on screen is the gap on the floor.
Add your dancers
The dancers of the opening formation are numbered: rename them and give each one a colour and a shape (circle, triangle or square), or add more in the “Dancers” panel. One choreography holds up to 500 dancers.
Apply a formation
The “Formation” tab holds 19 presets, grouped in the families listed below. Pick one and Stancz shares out the spots so that the total distance your dancers travel is as short as possible; the “Zoom” and “Rotation” sliders adjust its size and angle. You can still drag any dancer by hand.
- Essentials · Circle, Semicircle, Line, Rows, V, Diamond
- Columns · 1 column, 2 columns, 3 columns, 4 columns
- Curves · Arc, Spiral, Diagonal
- Dynamics · Grid, Star, Triangle, Wedge, Zigzag, Staircase
Chain formations and time them to the music
On the timeline, “Add a formation” adds an empty one or a copy of the current one, and each formation keeps its own duration. “Add music” imports an audio file from your computer; playback then moves the dancers from one formation to the next in time with the track, and “Movement trails” draw each dancer’s path.
Check it in 2D, 3D and from the audience
Switch between the 2D plan, the 3D stage and “Audience”: pick a seat in the house and Stancz shows which dancers are hidden behind others from there. The 3D views need a recent browser.
Share it with your dancers
“Share” sends an invitation by email. A dancer invited as a viewer creates an account, installs nothing and opens the choreography in a browser or in the app; a choreography shared with them does not count toward their own plan. Inviting someone who can edit requires Pro.
Open it on your phone
Sign in with the same account in the Stancz app for iPhone, iPad or Android, or in the phone’s browser: the same choreographies are there. In rehearsal, Present mode shows the formation full-screen and Follow mode highlights one dancer’s dot.
Free plan: up to 3 choreographies, 4 formations each
The free plan keeps up to 3 choreographies at a time, with up to 4 formations in each, and it opens the whole editor: to-scale stage, presets, music, 2D, 3D and audience views, and view-only sharing. No card is asked, and there is no end date.
Pro, at €3.99/month, removes both limits and lets you invite people who edit your choreographies, sort them into folders and restore the ones you deleted.
If a subscription ends, nothing is deleted: your 3 oldest choreographies stay editable and the others become read-only.
What the browser version does not do
Before you start, here is what Stancz does not do:
- No export: Stancz does not produce PDF or image files. You share the choreography instead, and your dancers watch the transitions play.
- No real-time co-editing: two people do not edit the same choreography at the same moment.
- No dance school management: no enrolment, class schedules or invoices.
- It does not choreograph for you: Stancz places and moves the dancers you choose, and the steps stay yours.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a dance formation maker website with nothing to download?
Yes. Stancz runs in the browser on Windows, macOS, Linux and Chromebook: you open stancz.com, create an account and start placing dancers. Your choreographies are saved online with your account, so they follow you from one computer to another and to your phone.
What does the free plan include?
Up to 3 choreographies at a time and 4 formations per choreography, with the whole editor: to-scale stage, 19 presets, music, and the 2D, 3D and audience views. Pro, at €3.99/month, removes both limits.
Can I export my formations to PDF?
No. Stancz does not export PDF or image files: your dancers open the shared choreography and watch the transitions play in motion.
Is it a dance blocking website or an app?
Both: the same editor runs as a website in the browser and as an app on iPhone, iPad and Android, with one account and the same choreographies. Blocking a show, who stands where and when they move, is what it is made for.
Can my team edit a choreography together?
Not at the same moment: Stancz has no real-time co-editing. With Pro, you can invite people who edit your choreography too; each change is saved online and reaches the others shortly after.
How many dancers can I place?
Up to 500 dancers in one choreography. The presets adapt to the number of dancers, from a duo to a large group.
Try it in your browser
The editor opens at stancz.com, with nothing to install. The app is also on the App Store and Google Play, with the same account.
