Stancz, an alternative to Sway Formations

Sway Formations and Stancz do the same job: place dancers on a stage, time the formations to the music, then show everyone where to stand. Both open in a browser and have an app for iPhone and iPad. They part ways on three points: Android, how a team is billed, and what each one adds around the placement itself.

What Sway Formations highlights: “The dance formation app for performance teams”

The same screens, except Android

Sway Formations runs in the browser and in its iPhone and iPad app, on the App Store since September 2025. Captains build on a computer or an iPad, dancers check their spot on iPhone. The maker says it plainly: “There is no Android app”.

Stancz runs in the browser on PC and Mac, with nothing to install, and has apps for iPhone, iPad and Android. The apps open the same choreographies as the browser.

In a team where some dancers carry an Android phone, that is the most concrete difference: Sway Formations offers them no app, Stancz publishes one on the Google Play Store.

Billed per team, or per account

Sway Formations bills per team, never per dancer. The free plan takes up to 15 members and 2 captains, with audio files of up to 3 minutes. Plus costs $4.99 per month for 30 members and 3 captains, with templates. Pro, at $9.99 per month, removes the member caps and adds video uploads. Those are website prices: in the App Store, each plan costs $1 more per month.

Stancz bills per account: The free plan covers 3 choreographies and 4 formations per choreography; the Pro subscription lifts these limits for €3.99/month or €29.99/year. Sharing a choreography view-only with the team is free; giving editing rights to another account requires Pro. Schools and associations have a dedicated plan at €99/year for up to 100 members.

So the two models do not compare line by line: Sway Formations caps the size of the team, Stancz caps the number of choreographies and formations.

What Sway Formations adds around placement

The Sway Formations Plus plan includes an AI assistant that suggests formation layouts. The Pro plan turns practice video into 3D motion (“video-to-3D”) and adds production lighting.

Stancz has neither AI nor motion capture. It offers 19 preset formations that adapt to the number of dancers, and you can save your own formations to reuse them.

For a team that wants to start from generated ideas, or rebuild a passage filmed in rehearsal, the gap favours Sway Formations.

What Stancz does

Stancz places dancers on a to-scale stage, offers 19 preset formations that adapt to the number of dancers, animates every transition, and shows the stage from above, in 3D and from the audience’s seat. Moves are timed to the imported music, and the LED backdrop screen is programmed cue by cue. The choreography is shared with the team, who can comment on a formation, and each dancer can follow their own dot, highlighted with a halo, in Follow mode. A choreography takes up to 500 dancers.

What Stancz does not do: no PDF export, and no dance studio admin (enrolment, class schedules, invoicing, attendance). It does not teach dance steps either. Nor does it allow simultaneous editing.

When to choose Sway Formations over Stancz

  • You want an AI assistant to suggest formation ideas, or to turn practice video into 3D motion: the Sway Formations Plus plan has the first, the Pro plan the second. Stancz offers neither.
  • You share editing with a second captain without paying: the Sway Formations free plan takes 2 captains and 15 members. With Stancz, giving editing rights to another account requires Pro.
  • You want a tool already adopted by many teams: the maker of Sway Formations claims over 40,000 dancers on over 4,000 teams.
